Promotions that are secret or require registration

We really don't want to give everyone a discount so we'll mention it to a few folks only when we have to.  That's the message I'm getting when an airline tells me that I must register to qualify for a special promotion (extra frequent flyer miles, price discounts, etc.).  I guess it's like grocery coupons.

An airline faces a competitive challenge when another airline starts service to/from their hub.  One of the primary commandments of the airlines is "thou shalt not invade thy competitor's hub."  Rather than compete on price or service, both airlines offer travelers extra frequent flyer miles but you must register to get them.  Smart marketing but a pain in the neck (or lower).

My plea, if you're going to offer a discount or something special, don't make me jump through flaming hoops to receive it.
